Keep America Moving Forward By Signing Up

President Obama speaking

We will be holding our monthly meetings the 4th Tuesday of each month, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Old School House in East Bradford. We need your help to sign up for President Obama’s reelection campaign. Also, we have a host of great candidates that are running in the November General Election. Please check out our candidates page for details about them.

Here are just some of President Obama’s accomplishments in his first term:

  • Signed into law an economic plan that saved America from a depression, restored growth, and created or saved as many as 3.6 million jobs.
  • Signed into law landmark health insurance reform that holds insurance companies accountable, gives people and small businessess greater control of health care, and improves the quality of health care for all Americans.
  • Fought against Wall Street lobbyists to sign into law historic consumer protections and financial reforms that shield American families from unfair lending practices from credit card and mortgage companies, rein in the excesses of Wall Street, and work to prevent future financial crises.
  • Reformed the college loan system by ending subsidies to banks and using the money to make college more affordable. He also invested in community colleges that are providing Americans with the skills they need to succeed in today’s economy.
  • Rescued the American auto industry, which saved millions of American jobs and helped GM and Chrysler become profitable again while repaying taxpayers.
  • Repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which makes it possible for individuals to serve in the military regardless of their sexual orientation.
  • Helped women get the equal pay they deserve by signing into law the Lilly Ledbetter Act.
  • Ended the war in Iraq, initiated a responsible drawdown of forces in Afghanistan, and ordered the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

Corbett Advocates Ultrasound Before Abortion

Governor Corbett advocated for a radical new law to force women to undergo a medically unnecessary ultrasound 24 hours before seeking abortion care. The law would also require that the ultrasound screen be shoved in a woman’s face and doctors would have to note if a woman refused to look at it.

And it’s not just women’s rights that the right-wing Republicans in Pennsylvania are after. They’re targeting senior citizens, students, low-income families, and people with disabilities.
Click here to stand with Patrick Murphy and tell Gov. Corbett to stop demeaning women and oppose the mandatory ultrasound bill right away.

Candidate Spotlight for the 156 Legislative Race

Bret Binder

Bret is the founder and managing member of Binder & Canno, LLC, a boutique law firm located in East Bradford Township. Before founding his law firm, Bret was law clerk to Justice Sandra Schultz Newman of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He credits his interest in the law to his father, David F. Binder, Esquire (author of “The Hearsay Handbook” and “Binder on Evidence”).

As a small business owner, Bret has created jobs, provided security for a number of families and contributed significantly to the economic growth of his community. Bret has been part-owner of “Pudding Lane Brookline” a gourmet rice pudding emporium in Haverford Township, and was previously part owner of Strikes Bowling Lounge. He was the general partner of Seamazing, LLC, a real estate investment firm, and a member of Darby Station Apartment Associates, LLC and Cambridge Princeton Properties, LLC, both real estate investment companies.

Bret is an avid bowler and baseball player. A star pitcher, he was the ace of two semi-pro baseball teams from 2005 to 2009. He has played semi-pro ball every season since 1997. He has bowled in a league with his family every week since he was a teenager. Bret has tutored many students in SAT’s, LSAT’s, GRE’s and GMAT’s. He has rehabilitated historic homes and revitalized vacant homes and buildings in troubled communities. Currently, he is restoring his 1710 home located in East Bradford Township, Chester County.

A lifelong Pennsylvanian, Bret graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Economics (with minors in mechanical engineering and mathematics) and went on to Villanova Law School where he became interested in politics.

Recently, Bret was instrumental in developing the Constitutional argument against the preliminary redistricting plan which butchered the 156th district by carving out half of West Chester Borough from the district thus significantly reducing the chances of a Democrat recapturing the seat. He, along with Mayor Carolyn Comitta and Rich Miller, a graduate student at West Chester University, testified against the plan before the Reapportionment Commission in Harrisburg.

Bret is seeking office because, as a legislator, he will use his experience in the law to protect the vital interests of the community, clarify and streamline existing legislation, and work on legislation to promote the economy, job creation, education, and the environment.

Tea Party Republicans Put Economy in Jeopardy

As you may know the Standard & Poor has lowered America’s long term rating from AAA to AA+. This has sent the world markets in turmoil and has put our local economy in jeopardy. Here is what S&P had to say regarding Tea Party Republican policies:
Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012, remain in place. We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.
-Standard & Poor’s, Ratings on the Global Credit Portal, August 5, 2011

Why this matters to you?

Local Tea Party Republicans are running for the West Chester Area School Board and are proposing across the board cuts to education. This will have a disastrous effect on the quality of education within the West Chester Area School District. Moody’s currently rates the school district with a AAA bond rating. The Tea Party controlled school board has already decided to borrow funds from the general reserve that was meant for emergency uses only! Depletion of the general fund and a deterioration of the tax base, due to the real estate market, will have a negative impact on this rating and could lead to a downgrade. This will force to the school board to either cut educational programs, athletics, furlough teachers, or dramatically raise taxes. Not to mention that home values will fall dramatically. A loss of the AAA bond rating of the West Chester Area School District will have more of an impact locally than the downgraded rating of the United States. All politics is local.
We encourage you to GOOGLE school board members Sean Carpenter, Maria Pimley, Heidi Adsett, and Terri Clark. Parents should also GOOGLE current school board candidates Maureen Snook, Karen Miller, Vince Murphy, Galen Plona, and Linda Raileanu.
